Case Study

Tuesday, January 26, 2021

The first thing I had to do was make a name. My group decided on Quarantine Killer. The movie is about a virus that causes individuals to destroy each other. But people think it's a human who's killing people. This film will be based on Norovirus, a virus. This will be found later by a group of scientists. There is, hopefully, a cure. During the film pitch, I had to research what company I wanted to promote my film to. A production that I picked was BlumHouse Production. Blumhouse Productions because they are known for their Halloween series and their low-budget movies are also known. Our film is associated with other films made by this company since our film is a slasher horror film.

To Distribute

Our film will be shown on Cable, DVD, Blu-ray, and in theaters. We are planning to distribute our film through smaller film companies or streaming services. We will make several trailers and advertise our film on the radios to pursue distribution of our film. We will be pursuing a festival circuit distribution because the festival circuit helps us to add more advertising to our film.

Audience

Our film should appeal to its audience and make them feel like they can relate to what the film says, being quarantined, and all.

For our budget, we just going to work on a small one.

Film Pitch

The final project will be a video titled Quarantine Killer. This project will be about a murderer who goes after quarantined people. With the terms of the AICE Media Studies syllabus, This project will fall under the Portfolio of Component 1: Foundation. It will meet Evaluation Objectives 2, 3, and 4.  For doing research,  I want to use the internet and also use producers of horror genre scripts. Reading many scripts and doing a lot of film analyses will allow me to have a better undertaking of the horror(slasher)  genre. Also watching many horror movies, to see how much they have changed.

Because this is a group project, I will also work with Catalina Cardona and Demitry Louine.

Final Project Proposal

Lionsgate is renowned for film production and distribution. While the company tends to concentrate more on the distribution and production of action and dramas as well as franchises such as "The Hunger Games" its history has demonstrated a commitment to quality horror properties. Although Lionsgate itself may not specialize in horror movies, it has helped to bring to the masses some great cult classics, cinematic shows, and hair-raising franchises. Massive gore and violence have been included in the company's more popular projects, making it a staple of modern body horror, and while some of these films have seen limited critical praise, audiences love them

Movies they made

  •  American Psycho (2000)
  •   High Tension (2003)
  • Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark (2019)
- With the story, I am trying to have a movie that could look good as Lion Gate. They have these great movies with really good reviews.

Mission Statement

Friday, January 15, 2021

SATS stands for Setting(location), Audience, Titles, and Social group.

Setting
Horror movies are fear-based films. They need a very creepy plot to scare the public. The color for most of them is dark as black and grey. The scenario could vary from an infected house to a cemetery. For an external setting, the frame could be a forest. Many places in the house are abandoned or intermediate toppled. If the decor is a house, there might be trees and bushes around the house. The setting could also have blood and even knives, guns, etc.

Examples Images of Setting
Audience
Age
For the majority, the target audience for a horror film is around the age of 15 to 25. The reason is that most of them like chills because they are young adults or teenagers. In addition, horror movies will not be a good movie to watch for the youngest children since many horror movies have very scary pictures like The Nun(2018) seems very disturbing.

Gender
Horror movies are for all gender because of the amount of diversity they put on each character.

Titles
The main titles of the horror film should resemble the movie. It should have the same color scheme as some characters in the film. The horror movies font should be bold like THIS or THIS

Example

Social groups
Blood and extreme violence are usually the objective interests of a horror film. Even, aimed at people who have a curiosity about the mysterious and the supernatural. Like many horror films hide details from the viewer, they may also be targeted at people who enjoy a feeling of suspense and illusion.

Horror films can also be directed at groups of individuals. Horror films, for example, are targeted at groups of teens, as watching a horror film and getting scarred together is almost a social experience. Teenagers' groups are also drawn to these films as it gives a group something to chat about and think about.

  • The second shot is them giving a lecture about what they do which could be in the movie later on.

  • This is where they might hide or keep their haunted things.

  • These shots are showing the actual people since this movie was based on a true story.

  • The names aside theme are the actors who played them

  • The Black and white images show that it could have been an old story or documentary.

  • This could probably mean that there might be some death in the movie hint the cemetery and gravestones

  • The doll might be in the movie and might be the cause of the weird things happening to the family.

Shot by Shot Analysis of The Conjuring

Tuesday, January 12, 2021

The opening sequences for all movies are where the filmmakers try not to reveal too much information and also putting the name of the production and cast members.  For horror movies, all have the same concepts. Concepts like dark, scary font, and color scheme.

For example Halloween(1976) and Insidous(2006)

One simple similarity you can notice is the music. They have this low and high pitch which makes it scarier. The lighting on both is low key lighting. On Halloween(1976) one, you can only see the front of the jack o lantern and on the Insidious, they have shadows around the setting. The bold font also makes it look more scary and intense.

Horror Opening Sequences

The type of genre I would like to make is a horror film. This includes movies like Chucky, Annabell, or The Nun. The reason why is because of their convection. The main theme of horror film Is scary and dark. The camera work for the most is probably the hardest part because of the different types they use. For example, A long shot to show the scary setting, or maybe a POV shot of the character running or panting. Editing is very simple. Filmmakers will use CGI to add creepy or abnormal things to the film. The setting of most horror films is usually old places or abandoned places. Sometimes horror movies weather are gloomy and dark. The sound is also great convection for horror. The sound could set the setting like when it rains you could actually hear the rain. Another sound example is screaming heartbeat or heavy breathing. There is a lot of representation in horror movies like why are women the main victim and why is there always a villain or a Hero. These are very common representation like you could see these in Cult of Chucky or The Conjuring.

Example
- Setting: Gloomy and Dark also Abandon house.
- Camera work POV

- Editing CGI

Horror (1/11)

The Opening Credits is showing the people that helped with the film.  For example, the opening credits could have the actor, editors, and director. The title sequence and the opening credits might look the same but the title sequence is at the end and it might be a long list of people who worked on the film. On the opening, they used different types of fonts and backgrounds. They use this to settle a theme into the film. The techniques that could be used are animated or having 3D images. For example the film " Suicide Squad" they used an animated mage for their opening credits.

In the clip here they showed how they announced their actors. They used symbols of there character next to the actor name, Then named that help with the film like Director and Editor

Opening Credits

Today I looked at some past students' past blog research. I'm still trying to get used to this blogging program. In past blogger posts, they had videos that show the process of how they did everything.  he kind of movie scary or creepy type of film. The genre is going to be horror and the theme might be dark, spooky, or frighten. The opening scene is a great way to give information because it could show the audience what might happen and show how the film is going to be constructed. The film I'm trying to make is going to place by an ally or somewhere dark. This movie is for teens or young adults so, 14-19. The reason for this is because they are more likely to be interested. After all, younger kids are easily scared than older ones. The representation is going to be about easily scared kids going to a hunted place or somewhere they could get easily scared off. A movie clip that really inspires me is "The conjuring I". The reason why chose this movie is because of the mise-en-scene.

The Decor from the film is the actual thing that The Warrens found.

The setting

The setting of the place looks like they are in a worn-down house. The house looks haunted and scary which I want my film to look like.
